Alberto Román GESSA FERNÁNDEZ

A. Román Gessa Fernández is a researcher at the Department of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering (HYDR) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) since 2025. As background, he holds a B. Sc. in Environmental Sciences and a M. Sc. in Water Resources and Environment both at the University of Málaga (Spain).

With more than 4 years of experience, mostly in consultancy, he has worked in national and international projects (Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, UK, Chile, France, Oman and Mexico) regarding water resources management, groundwater extraction, remediation and management of contaminated soils and water and groundwater modelling.

Currently, he is working, as a member of the research team of Prof. Marijke Huysmans within the Einstein Telescope project, as a groundwater modeller and researcher of fractured hydrogeology, developing geological (Leapfrog) and hydrogeological (FEFLOW) models to assess the impacts of the facility as well as any possible mitigation techniques that had to be applied.

He is also member of the International Association of Hydrogeologist (AIH) and he is a former member of the Groundwater Correspondent Network of IGRAC as the representative for Spain, winning the People's Choice Award in the Groundwater Story of the year 2025.
