The impact of large dams on the climate
The impact of large dams on the climate
The objective of this project is to comprehensively evaluate the effects of dams on the climate system at local, regional, and global scales. To achieve this, a modeling framework will be developed that incorporates the representation of dams within the Community Earth System Model. By integrating dams into the model, the project aims to assess the added value of this inclusion for realistic climate simulations. The study will quantify the overall impact of reservoirs on the 20th century climate, with a specific focus on extreme events such as heat waves, droughts, and intense precipitation. Additionally, the project will differentiate between the local and downstream contributions to the total climate impact caused by dams. The outcomes of this research will contribute to improved climate change projections, facilitate a better understanding of the relationship between climate change and future water availability, and inform decision-making regarding sustainable water resource management in the face of changing climate conditions.
