In this project, scientists from the ‘Laboratoire de Glaciologie at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)’ and the ‘Water and Climate department of the VUB’ are looking for very old ice in Antarctica. More specifically, by combining modelling efforts, remote sensing observations, and fieldwork, these scientists will try to identify locations with very old close to the Princess Elisabeth Station (Belgium’s Antarctic research station). This old ice will be collected both from the surface of blue ice areas, and at shallow depths through drilling efforts. The FROID project is funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO).
